Build Your Own DVR.
In recent weeks I have built a new home computer to work on. This means I now have enough spare parts for a second computer. I was thinking of ideas of what to do with it. The possibilities were file server, Linux box (so I can learn Linux), or just another computer. This week I came up with another idea. Every Monday I have class until 10p.m. This of course means that I miss the best new show this year…Heroes. So I said to myself what if I can build a DVR or TiVo type system out of my old computer. After doing some research I discovered MythTV. It is a free software packages that allows you to capture video very similar to a TiVo. After reviewing the requirements I found that I am missing a few pieces. On this blog I will hopefully show the steps in converting old computer equipment into a home made DVR system.

I’ve actually been looking into doing this myself—not with an old computer though. I’ve been browsing through TV tuner reviews and looking at prices.
Let me know if you find out anything interesting. Right now, I think I’m probably leaning toward an internal tuner as opposed to an external one. But, even then I don’t know which one to puchase.
Josh’s podcast on Vygotsky’s Discussion
I see you have a list of podcasts available. I picked Vygotsky because I have an interest in ZPD. Boy! This thing could be edited, for sure. It’s a class gone amok in the beginning. Cut out the idle chatter that does not really set up the lecture, and get right to the heart of it, or you will lose many of your listeners.
6 1/2 minutes into the podcast before Vygotsky was even mentioned. I was really distressed with the content. Just not enough Vygotsky and lots of random stuff. Are you recording all the lectures in this class and making them available for class members? Or is this general stuff for everyone’s consumption? Just curiousl I feel it needs an into and a wrapup. Again, just my two cents. Shows how faculty members can run amok given a microphone…. grin Cathie
I listened to the podcast on students and changing ideas. I liked that the professor list the 4 reasons on why students are more apt to change their ideas on.
